Let’s Get Sauced & Rubbed! Or is it Rubbed & Sauced?

Memorial Day Weekend officially kicks off grilling season and it’s time to get sauced and rubbed!

I don’t know about you but I love just about anything BBQ’d!

I’ll pass on the rattlesnake, squirrel and opossum but I’m totally down with just about anything else.

GrillingThis month Bottorff’s Ruffles & Rust has stocked up on all kinds of sauces, rubs and grilling cookbooks.  I may have gone just a little overboard.  I love it so much that I  couldn’t decide when I was taste testing and reading books so I got them all.

Here are a couple of my new favorites;

Spiceologist rubs and seasonings, If you haven’t tried these… you must!  A little company in Spokane Washington (we love Heather one of the founders who you also might now as Farmgirl Gourmet) is producing the most amazing blends.

Check out this video

Yeah that one got my attention too!

Hab butterSmokey Honey Habanero Butter

The other thing I love about Spiceologist besides they are a local Washington business is the recipes! Whatever product you purchase they have multiple recipes for that item.

The only limit with this product is your imagination!

I read some great Grilling Tips From Garden & Gun Magazine  today.

Click here to check those out!

And our newest addition to the Bottorff’s YUM list is

Sober Dough Bread Mixes.

There is so much to talk about with this product that you’ll just have to come see me.  It’s not “just” beer bread! Just sayin!

Not a beer fan, not a problem! All these bread mixes are excellent with all kinds of carbonated beverage.

Again………..only limited by your imagination.

Now, since you’ve read all the way to the bottom of the page and I always like to reward readers (remember skimmers get screwed!) with a little reward.

If you stop in on Saturday 5/28 or Sunday 5/29 and say ” let’s talk BBQ”

Debbie and I will give you 50% off any BBQ Cookbook with the purchase of any sauce, rub, or bread mix.

Also please take a moment this weekend to remember the real reason for Memorial Day and be thankful for our freedoms.

We hope you have a fabulous  and safe weekend with friends and family.

Bowties are sexy!

So for the last couple years you’ve seen a surge in the popularity of bowties.

I’m not going to lie… I LOVE THEM!!!

I think they are sexy as hell! I thought they were sexy before they were popular, but I thought it was cuz I had a thing for big dorks. Now that I’m older,  I think the sexy part of it is a guy who wears a bowtie, has confidence in his style.

I’ve been working on my husband to wear one for a couple years now. So far, I haven’t been successful, but I’m going to keep trying!

Have you seen the new wood bowties? At first I thought “that’s kind of dumb” but then I saw them in person, saw them on, and I was SOLD!

They just look so dapper!  And for a wedding…………

Oh don’t even get me started on the fabulousness of that business!

And now that fedora hat!  Are you kidding?  Who doesn’t love a man in a fancy hat? It’s like a guy in a tux.

I saw a couple girls with this hat on and they looked so chic!

Let me introduce you to the company that is producing all these handsome products. I met them on my trip to Atlanta and got to spend some time talking with them. I like them even more now!

Two Guys Bow Ties

You may have seen them on Shark Tank.

They partnered with Daymond John the creator of FUBU

2guys team

Here’s their story……….

Two Guys Bow Ties is an innovative and distinctive brand that has reinvented the classic bow tie. Derived from a collaboration of creative and tasteful minds, Two Guys Bow Ties™ is an accessory created for a daring new generation of men set to express themselves with originality and flair.

Launched in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2012, Two Guys Bow Ties™ is the brainchild of designers, Adam Teague and Tim Paslay. Looking to fill a void in men’s accessories the pair developed hand crafted bow ties that enabled them to fuse old school craftsmanship with modern style. Their efforts resulted in an innovative and superiorproduct that established wood as a new and distinctive material in the fashion industry.

The duo shares a love of working with their hands and an interest in impeccable menswear. This product enables them to do what they love while sharing a special product within the menswear industry. Already initiating a trend, Two Guys Bow Ties™ has quickly received recognition from tastemakers internationally and a vast market of dapper clientele.

Two Guys Bow Ties™ are made from a variety of rare and exotic pieces of hardwood. Sourced throughout the world, product materials include African Zebrawood, Peruvian Walnut, South American Bocote, Canary and more.  A range of diverse patterns such as argyle, plaid, polka dot, and more are laser etched into the wood making them both increasingly unique and attractive.  Each bow tie also incorporates an array of fine fabrics resulting in a truly special accessory.

I love that they are made in the USA and handcrafted from a group of super talented people. Now I’m sure you are thinking “WOW these are so cool I must get them, but I don’t know where!”

Well ……………. think or look no further!

Bottorff’s has them in stock!

Stop in to take a look, touch, and oooooooooh and aaaaaaaaah over them. And…….we can special order for you or your wedding party.

It’s Going To Be A Long Ugly Break Up

One of my New Year resolutions (in addition to blogging more)  was to get myself to a doctor for an annual check up. It had been several years (ok, over 7) since I had been. My doctor had moved, and after she left I never really bothered to find another one. It just seemed like too much work to find a new one.

 I didn’t feel terrible, I just didn’t feel fantastic.

Most of the time I felt like I was losing my mind which I just chalked up to the stress of owning a business, poor eating, hormonal, and waaaaaaaaaaay too much time self diagnosing myself on WebMD.

I had a customer who had some health issues and found a doctor that did Integrated Medicine and loved her new doctor.  I thought “Well that sounds interesting! I’ll make an appointment!”

Appointment day comes, I like this new doctor, she’s great. We do all the regular stuff, some blood work, some not regular stuff, and some more tests.

Doctor says “let’s make an appointment to go over the results”

Ok, that sounds good!

For a week or more I stressed myself out with worry. I was positive my blood pressure was out of control, I was diabetic, had a heart condition, ooooooooh my WebMD Doctoring kicked in and I was convinced death would be knockin on my door soon.

The follow-up day comes, and not too soon, as I probably could have worried myself to death…………

Blood pressure good, colesteral good, sugar levels good, thyroid good, ……everything is good! Not really a damn thing wrong with me!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm go figure!

Then the Doctor says……… I think the problems that you’re experiencing are all really stemming from some food allergies.

So immediately I think (because I’m a doctor ya know) NO PROBLEM!

I’ll just start eating more of those foods and build up a tolerance! Makes sense right?

Then the Doc starts in,  goes down her little list of what should now be off limits;

female chopping food ingredients

Mozzarella cheese

Black pepper

Black pepper

Now as she’s talking, I’m not really listening the only thing I can think about is………………..

Damn! That sounds like a really good pizza to me! I should go have pizza when I leave here!

Chicken-Mushroom-Pesto-PizzaOnce I came back to reality and back to my senses, I realized what she was saying.

NO MORE SANDWICHES?  Are you kidding? I live on sandwiches… I literally live on sandwiches!

No chicken? How will I live? What will I eat?

Mozzerella cheese……..no way! How is that going to work during tomato season? Caprice salad is a staple at my house. No Lasagna?  Are you kidding? No pasta or cheese???

Dig the hole and put me in it! My life has come to an end!

Black pepper?  Now I’m thinking she might be a some sort of quack! .

Calm down Timi, maybe she doesn’t know what she’s saying or realize the implications of this information. Maybe she can’t see that you are ready to have a nervous breakdown.

Well to make an already long story short, it’s been about 3 weeks and I’m not totally off the sauce!  Me and gluten are in the middle of what is going to be a very long ugly break up!

We’ve had a great love affair for so many years. We were good together!

Que  music……….. The Way We Were by Barbara Streisand.

Like the corners of brownies
breaded memories
Of the way we were
Scattered croutons
Of salads left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were…………..
me and gluten
You get the idea! It’s ugly!

Chicken, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese and black pepper…… well we’re just kind of in a “booty call” relationship right now. I don’t see it lasting much longer. Easier to kick it to the curb than I had thought. But I can’t resist a cocktail and callin them up sometimes!

If you have any recipes, tricks or ideas on how to break up forever with my loves, please post it in the comments. I could use all the help I can get!

Bloody Mary Crazy

I don’t know if you have noticed or not, but Bloody Mary’s are makin a come back!.

Now, in my world they never went anywhere, but the new popularity of them has me excited!  When old things get popular again there is always a new twist or improvement.

One of the twists  of the new and improved Bloody Mary is the flavored vodka.  There are lots of flavors out now, BUT I’m tellin ya the best Bloody Mary I ever had was made with Veggie infused vodka!  Seriously!

The jar was packed with celery, onions, red peppers, green peppers, garlic, jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, and pepper corns.  I’m not sure why I didn’t ask the bartender EXACTLY what was in there and how they did it. I’m usually all over that!  As soon as I got home I Googled how to make that vodka. I found some instructions on My Life Cookbook that seemed to be pretty close to what I had.  Shoving a jar full of veggies with vodka sounds almost healthy doesn’t it?

Now I’m a big fan of Whodini Sisters Bloody Mary Potion which is the perfect blend of all the spices and sauces you need in a Bloody Mary. You add 1 oz of the potion with 4 oz of your favorite tomato juice and BAM! You got yourself a kick ass Bloody Mary Mix!

Now add the veggie vodka…………HOLY YUM!

bloody mary whodiniYes Whodini Sisters is available at Bottorff’s Ruffles & Rust

Back in the day when tailgating and camping with my friend Laura, her and I liked to have a little friendly (not really it was total cutthroat)  Bloody Mary competitions to see who could make the best Bloody Mary, AND who could come up with the best skewer for that Bloody Mary.

A winner was never determined. Too many? Maybe!

I love looking on Pinterest to see how crazy people can get with the skewer. Because let’s face it……….. the skewer is really the second best part of a Bloody Mary! One doesn’t go to a certain restaurant and order a Bloody Mary because they really remembered the actual Bloody Mary or were in love with the glass it came in… OH HELL NO! You remember the skewer and seek out that watering hole again.

Now that’s a skewer!

Now go out there,  one up  and impress your friends with your Bloody Mary makin  knowledge!

Pantone 2016

I’m loving the Panton colors for this year!

Pantone 12

What are Pantone colors?

The PANTONE  Matching System (PMS) is the dominant spot color  printing system in the United States. Printers use a special mix of ink to achieve the color  needed. Each spot color in the PANTONE  system is assigned a name or a number. There are over one thousand PANTONE  spot colors  available.

Annually, Pantone declares a particular color “Color of the Year”. Twice a year the company hosts, in a European capital, a secret meeting of representatives from various nations’ color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year; Read the full story.

I have to admit that when they announced the two Pantone colors of the year I thought “oh good God, everything is going to look like a 1980’s baby shower! What were they thinking?”

That Rose Quartz paired with cooper is KILLIN ME!!!  I love love love it!

I’m normally not a gray person. Pretty much everything in my world is black or white.  But that Rose Quartz and copper paired with Lilac Gray…….oy vay!pantone 5See what I’m talkin about!

Then all the wedding sites started bustin out their take on the Rose Quartz and Serenity , it makes a girl want to get plan a wedding!

It’s going to be gorgeous on your table this year!

Then let’s talk men!
panton 3

There is no way I’m going to get my husband to wear this but if I could………….

That Fiesta vest would be his!

pantone 9

This too is totally out of the question at my house but isn’t this rose quartz linen suit beautiful??

Anyway you get the picture!  This years Pantone colors aren’t going to make everything look like a baby shower as I had thought it would. Maybe those folks down at Pantone do have a clue to what’s going on.

All these colors should start showing up in your favorite stores this next month.

Welcome 2016

Welcome 2016 and to the new Bottorff’s Ruffles & Rust blog!

I just got back from a week in Atlanta where I attended the 2016 AmericasMart International Gift and Home Fashions Market.

It’s a crazy place this market!  It’s overwhelming, exciting, inspirational and exhausting but

This year we (my friend Laura and husband Jay) decided to rent a house from Airbnb.

cabin 1

I’m not going to lie………… We really liked it!

The cabin was built pre civil war and survived the Atlanta fire during the war. The history in the wood and mortar was so amazing. You wished those logs could talk. The stories they would have to tell.

Along with the cabin being so cute and comfortable it was also close to the market and a few of our favorite restaurants that we like to visit when in town.

They aren’t fancy but DAMN they are good!

mary macP.S We stock this cookbook at Bottorff’s Ruffles & Rust because I wanted the recipe for tomato casserole and sweet tea.

Mary Mac’s Tea Room is one the oldest restaurants in Atlanta. Their story is really interesting. Not only is it REALLY GOOD Southern home cookin, but they serve little cinnamon rolls while your waiting for dinner to arrive.

mary mac 1Seriously! Cinnamon rolls before dinner!

Our other favorite is OK Café

ok cafeThey have the most amazing pimento cheese and I’m still dreaming about the grilled pork chop I had. It was sooooooooo good!

Now it’s back to reality and work!

cleaning pictures

I found some really fun new merchandise in Atlanta. All of the items coming in are made in the USA and by small family owned companies. Which I love!

This next week it’s all about shopping local!  Finding some great new locally made items is on my agenda.

Over the next few months I’ll share some of their stories with you. I also have lined up some great vintage items that are set to arrive at the store in a couple weeks.  I’m soooooooo excited for everything to start getting here.

That means………………………

It’s time!

It’s time to make room for all the new stuff.  I’ll be putting things on sale to make room for new merchandise.

Not just on sale, but PRICED TO MOVE!

If you haven’t been in for a while, stop in to see what’s happening or we can just talk pork chops, pimento cheese, and banana puddin!  Either way it will be nice to see you!

See you soon!
